OCT Used to Discover an Association Between Retinal Nerve Layer and Cognitive Decline

Are changes in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) associated with current or future cognitive function in a large community cohort of healthy participants? A group of UK-based scientists used OCT technology to find out. In their study of over 500,000 participants, a significant link was discovered between RNFL thickness and cognitive function. This means that OCT could play an important future role in screening for future cognitive decline and the prevention of dementia.
